You’re Not Special

If you ever get the feeling that some great being created an entire universe just so you can have dominion over it, you are not special, you’re egotistical. If you pray to a god(s) to help you in your daily life and expect him to actually care, you are not special, you’re delusional. If you believe that you are a chosen people because the unproved god ‘says’ so, you are not special, you’re dangerous.

Why are the religious arrogant enough to think that humans are special and deserve to be placed at the center of the universe? Why do they believe that our lives are any more significant than any other life on the Earth?

Humans are just a speck of a speck of dust compared to the vastness and immensity of the universe. We are only a blink of the eye a brief flash in the pan. Why do the religious continue to conceitedly claim of their importance in the universe when they contribute nothing of value?

They would be wise to humble themselves; a task that may never be accomplished. If the universe can’t humble you than nothing will. You’re not special and neither is your god.

Atheism: A Pejorative

If Atheist ever plan on making a transition from the feared minority to the accepted majority within society, it must remove the pejorative connotation of the name. Atheism is often associated with the likes of Satan worshipers, genocidaires, criminals, and anyone else who is perceived to lack a general morality. New terms have been coined to further connote the belief system; such as Militant Atheism and even now we see New Atheism as a pejorative. In order to eliminate these false claims and dishonest attributions, atheist must work to create a new image that reflects positively on our beliefs—or rather—lack of beliefs.

The first step for Atheism to gain influence in society is to start the process of amelioration of the word Atheist, and this process will have to start on a local level. Continue reading

Why Freedom of Religion Will not Endure

My question is simple. Will the United States continue to have the unalienable right of freedom of religion if Christianity losses popularity? It is an interesting question to propose simply because the answer could be so freighting.

The United States of America is a predominantly Christian nation and has been since its birth in 1776. The only group that is more Christian than the general population is the elected representatives of the general population.

In the U.S. Senate the percentage of Christians is 85% .  In the House of Representatives the percentage of Christians is 89.3%[i]. The general population — 76%.[ii]

With the majority of power in the hands of one religion, what would happen if a minority religion or atheists started to gain significantly in numbers? Continue reading

The Outrageous Bible: A Series

Part 1:

            Gen. 6:4

“The Nephilim(race of giants) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown. “

In Genesis 6, the narrative describes a story— although it seems fragmented and out of place— of a race of giants who are created from the supposed intermingling of Angels (sons of God) with human women(daughters of humans). These race of giants are seen in various places in the Old Testament and clearly have a root in the oral tradition of the Israelites. Although the etiology of the myth is unknown there are many similar myths in various cultures about demigods. We see the Nephilim show up in Numbers 13:33, Deuteronomy 2:10-11 and 20-21, Deuteronomy 3:11, Joshua 12:4, Joshua 18:16, and most famously in 1 Samuel 17:4—the story of David and Goliath.  Of course, no archaeological evidence has ever been found proving that a race of giants ever existed, but hey, that’s no reason to stop believing in demigod giants.

Is the American Atheist Movement an Illusion?

While many of us American atheists like to believe that atheism is finally starting to grow and become more popular, it may sadly not be true. According to a Gallop poll from May 5-8 2011, where it ask the unambiguous question ‘Do you believe in God?’; 92% said yes and only 7% said no.

To put that number into perspective, in a 1947 Gallop poll on the belief in God, the number for non-belief was at 3%. So In almost six and a half decades, atheism has only grown by 4% within the American population.

So why has atheism struggled so much to gain popularity in America? Continue reading
